Lessons Learned

Maharishi was, above all, a teacher. He taught us to meditate, he taught us to teach others to meditate, and he taught us the truth about the Self in this new world we were beginning to experience. He was an embodiment of Transcendent Reality and as such, gave those around him the Life Lessons that they needed. Whether they were aware that they needed them or not.

The Source of the Water

In 1972 I was working on staff, helping with the TTC in La Antilla, Spain. One day, the water supply to the town stopped, and there was no water in any of the hotels or villas in the entire town. 

Maharishi called me into his room and asked me to go find the source of the water. I promptly set out to make some inquiries and managed to get the help of a local Spanish resident who knew something about the water supply for the town. It was a rainy afternoon, and the man offered to drive me up into the hills, where the cistern for the town’s water supply was located. 

We found the cistern, and I was able to open an access cover and look inside It was almost completely empty. However, water which was supplied by a pump from several kilometers away, was beginning to fill the cistern up. Apparently the pump had turned off for some time, no doubt due to an electrical outage. 

I figured that I had found the source of the water for the town, and that the situation was being resolved, and so I returned to tell Maharishi what I found. 

Alas! Maharishi was not at all happy with my report! He told me in no uncertain terms that he had directed me to go to the source of the water, and that I was to do just that. 

I was stunned! I had a vision of traveling over the hills to a distant river, and then the ocean, and the sun and rain, and…

…And then I realized where the source of the water must be…

…As I walked out of Maharishi’s room to go meditate on an inner journey to the Transcendent, I heard the sound of water starting to come out of the tap in the bathroom. 

And so that is how I really understood and experienced that Consciousness is truly the source and essence of all that is.
